Search the 'net with one of these fine search engines

[AltaVista] [Infoseek] [Webcrawler] [Yahoo!]

The eternal quest...

Searching the Internet, or more specifically the World Wide Web is becoming an increasingly challenging task as the amount of information available outstrips our ability to ever see it all...

Long gone are the days when you could simply browse a few pages and find links to the few resources that were available. The information content on the Web has reached the point where no one with a human lifespan could ever hope to even see a small fraction of the available data. Even with with a computer looking at each page for us, trudging slowly though every page on the Web, looking for matches to our search terms, it could take years. However, there is hope...

Computerized search engines are becoming more sophisticated every day, indexing millions of individual websites and collating the data in a format that is quickly searchable, making it easier to look for data on your topic. Often these are machines, and their associated staffs, dedicated to doing nothing but this one job.

Please note that we did not say that these search engines making looking easy. Crafting a data search is often a frustrating and complex task. Not only do you have to find relevant links, but also you must weed out the chaff, the unwanted, but unfortunately, related links. Plus, in a perfect world, all search engines would function the same way. Since we do not live in a perfect world, there must be help files... And there are as many help files as there are search engines.

With all of the above in mind, these few search engines, of the hundreds that exist, have been chosen to grace this search page. The following are the primary selection criteria:

  • Ease of use.
  • Availability of cogent help.
  • Speed of search routine.
  • Size of index.

We hope you can make as profitable a use of these resources as have we...
