LABCONCO SELF-CONTAINED CARBON-FILTERED ENCLOSURE SPECIFICATION PART 1 - GENERAL 1.01 Work Included: 1.01.01 This specification covers the requirements for the purchase of bench-mounted self-contained, carbon-filtered and carbon/HEPA- filtered enclosures which require no ducting. 1.01.02 This specification sets the intent for quality, performance and appearance. 1.02 Quality Assurance: 1.02.01 The manufacturer shall maintain a testing facility at their place of business for the performance testing of self-contained, carbon- filtered enclosures. Both enclosure and installation shall be in conformance to good construction practice and approved by the owner/user. The test facility must be available for owner/user inspection as well as the manufacturing facility and its quality control procedures. A computer-based carbon filter modeling program shall be used by the manufacturer to estimate filter life and the appropriateness of using a carbon-filtered enclosure for the customer's application. 1.03 References: 1.03.01 The bench-mounted self-contained, carbon-filtered enclosures shall conform to the following regulations and standards: SEFA -- 1 (Laboratory Fume Hoods) NFPA -- No. 45 (Fire Protection for Laboratories Using Chemicals 1982) section 6-1 through 6-14 ASTM E-84 -- Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials ASHRAE -- 110-95 (Method of Testing Performance of Laboratory Fume Hoods) ANSI -- Std. Z 9.5 (Laboratory Ventilation) UL -- Standard 3101-1 (115 volts, 60 Hz models only) CAN/CSA -- C22.2 No. 1010.1-92 (115 volt, 60 Hz models only) European Community -- Electrical Safety Standard: IEC 1010-1 and Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive: 89/336/EEC (230 volt, 50 Hz models only) 1.04 Submittals: 1.04.01 Bench mounted carbon-filtered enclosure product manuals shall be submitted by the manufacturer upon request. The enclosure supplier shall submit shop drawings when necessary for clarification. 1.05 Delivery and Storage: 1.05.01 Bench mounted, self-contained, carbon-filtered enclosures shall be delivered adequately protected from damage during shipment. 1.06 Warranty 1.06.01 Manufacturer's warranty against defects in material or workmanship on its self-contained, carbon-filtered enclosures for 1 year from date of installation or 2 years from date of purchase, whichever is sooner, shall include replacement of parts (except filters and lamps) and labor. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.01 Acceptable Manufacturer: 2.01.01 Labconco Corporation, 8811 Prospect Avenue, Kansas City, Missouri 64132, Paramount Filtered Enclosure, Paramount Duet Filtered Enclosure (for use with carbon-based and HEPA filter cells), and Paramount 360 Filtered Enclosure with clear back and baffle, Model numbers as described in the table. 2.02 Materials: 2.02.01 Frame and air foil shall be constructed of epoxy-coated aluminum. 2.02.02 Upper cabinet shall be constructed of cold rolled steel. 2.02.03 Baffle and back shall be constructed of epoxy-coated cold rolled steel (on models without clear back). 2.02.04 Baffle and back shall be constructed of 3/16" thick tempered safety glass (on models with clear back). When set screws are loosened, baffle shall pivot downward for cleaning. 2.02.05 Sash shall be 1/4" thick tempered safety glass. 2.02.06 Sides shall be 3/8" thick tempered safety glass. 2.02.07 A pair of roughing pre-filters shall be provided with the 3-ft enclosures and four roughing pre-filters with the 6-ft enclosures. 2.02.08 Lighting shall be provided by two 20-watt fluorescent lamps on 3-ft enclosures and four 20-watt fluorescent lamps on 6-ft enclosures. 2.02.09 Motor/blower (on non-HEPA-filtered models) shall be non- sparking with polypropylene impeller. Motor/blower (on HEPA-filtered models) shall be non-sparking with metal impeller. The 3-ft enclosures shall have one motor/blower and the 6-ft enclosures shall have two. 2.02.10 Carbon filter clamping mechanism shall be gas-assist type. 2.02.11 An 8-foot 3-wire cord and plug shall be provided. (Models wired for 230 volts, 50 Hz shall have a cord but no plug.) 2.02.12 Event timer shall count in seconds up to 8 hours. 2.02.13 An audible/visual alarm shall activate at programmed intervals. 2.02.14 A vapor sensor (on models with sensors) shall provide a detection method for organic solvent concentrations in filter bed exceeding 50 parts per million, and upon detection, to activate audible/visual alarm. 2.02.15 A second sensor (on non-HEPA filtered models with sensors) shall be located in exhaust air stream and shall activate audible/visual alarm upon detection of organic solvent concentrations exceeding 50 parts per million. 2.02.16 Optional mobile base stand (not included with enclosure) shall be epoxy-coated tubular steel frame with 5" diameter toe-locking casters and solid epoxy work surface. 2.02.17 Optional base cabinet (not included with enclosure) shall be epoxy-coated steel with solid epoxy work surface. 2.02.18 Accessory carbon-based filters shall provide a minimum of 52 lbs. of activated or treated carbon per set of two. The 3-ft enclosures shall require one set and the 6-ft enclosures shall require two sets of carbon filters. 2.02.19 Accessory HEPA filters shall be 99.99% efficient for removing 0.3 micron particulates or larger. The 3-ft enclosures shall require one set and the 6-ft enclosures shall require two sets of HEPA filters. 2.03 Fabrication: 2.03.01 Overall exterior dimensional information on bench top self-contained, carbon-filtered enclosures shall be as described in the table. 2.03.02 Enclosure shall be fully assembled and pre-wired at the manufacturer's factory. 2.03.03 Blower shall be located behind the front panel and shall provide face velocities of 80 or 100 fpm depending on sash position. Blower shall be serviceable from outside the enclosure. 2.03.04 Sash shall be angled, shall have two operating positions, 10.75" and 12.75", and shall pivot up to an opening of 22" for loading and cleaning. 2.03.05 Fluorescent lights shall be replaceable from the front of the enclosure. 2.03.06 Front panel shall include LCD for alternate display of filter saturation level and filter time elapsed. Two timers shall be user programmable 1) to alarm at user-determined internals that the filter should be checked 2) to alarm at a user-determined time that the filter should be changed. SET FILTER TIME, UP/DOWN, and ENTER programming switches shall allow the operator to reset the elapsed time display and alarm time when a new filter is installed. A security code shall be required to change the filter alarm time. 2.03.07 Face velocity shall be 100 fpm when sash opening is 10.75" and 80 fpm when sash opening is 12.75". 2.03.08 Motor/blower and light shall be controlled by separate switches. 2.03.09 Air foil shall ensure proper airflow into the enclosure. 2.03.10 Slotted baffle shall provide proper airflow and air/contaminant mixing. 2.03.11 Detector tube port shall be accessible from front of enclosure for carbon-based filter testing. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.01 Inspection 3.01.01 Carefully check the contents of the carton for damage that might have occurred in transit. 3.02 Preparation 3.02.01 Verify equipment rough-in before proceeding with work. 3.02.02 Coordinate with other trades for the proper and correct installation of plumbing and electrical rough-in and for rough opening dimensions required for the installation of the hood. 3.03 Installation 3.03.01 Install according to manufacturer's instructions. 3.03.02 Install according to standards required by authority having jurisdiction. 3.03.03 Install equipment plumb, square and straight with no distortion and securely anchor as required. 3.03.04 Sequence installation to ensure utility connections are achieved in an orderly and expeditious manner. 3.03.05 Touch up minor damaged surfaces caused by installation. Replace damaged components as directed by Architect. 3.04 Cleaning 3.04.01 Clean equipment, casework, countertops and all other surfaces as recommended by the manufacturer, rendering all work in a new and unused appearance. 3.04.02 Clean adjacent construction and surfaces which may have been soiled in the course of installation of work in this section. 3.05 Protection 3.05.01 Provide all necessary protective measures to prevent exposure of equipment and surfaces from exposure to other construction activity. 3.05.02 Advise contractor of procedures and precautions for protection of material and installed equipment and casework from damage by work of other trades.
